See all paintings In his novel "Naked Lunch” (a title suggested by beat writer Jack Kerouac), William Burroughs’ lunch is a "frozen moment when everyone sees what is on the end of every fork." I believe the best representational painting has that "nakedness of seeing"-- something more than the mere depiction of observed reality. Whether it's the description of light and atmosphere, or the passage of time, or the pleasures of beauty, good painting speaks a language filled with that clarity of seeing, something more than the sum of its painted parts. In my studio still-lifes, I combine favorite objects and materials with imagined and invented elements. The still-lifes are built of wood and stone, tape and nails, bottles and cardboard tubes. I am drawn to the heft and texture and color of fleshy fruits such as squash, pumpkins and melons. Some of my paintings are allegorical in nature. But I want each painting to afford viewers an opportunity to puzzle through the images and find their own meanings. The mind always strains to make sense of what it sees.
