Rubes' Tomatoes2002, oil on canvas, 48x40 in. I loved the universe-in-minature that Rube Goldberg cartoons would evoke. The notion that the most complex phenomena could explain the simplest actions was contradictory and mildly subversive. An early version of the painting had a fist-sized tomato rolling down the cardboard tube chute and vaulting off the wooden plank. I painted it out, but I think there is still a bit of the kinetic energy remaining beneath the surface. |
