Wheel Construction2002, oil on canvas, 62x46 in. The wooden wheel in the painting is a gear from an old grain-sifting machine. I saw it as an interval counter or calendar. The wheel is heavy (as is the steel auto jack upholding it) but the act of attaching a few objects caused it to tilt and fall. I did manage to re-balance the wheel and paint it from below, at an angle different from the rest of the painting. I returned to the studio one morning to find much of the still life broken on the ground, so I finished the painting with invented bits and pieces. |
